  • Use the correct amount of beans. If you need liquid barley porridge, then its ratio with water should be 1:4. For a crumbly consistency, use a water ratio of 2.5 to 1.
  • Soak before cooking. Without soaking in water, the grains become hard and do not cook well. Leave them overnight, pouring a glass of cereal with 1 liter of water.
  • Prepare pearl barley porridge in the oven or on the stove. This is the only cereal that cannot be cooked in the microwave. But when cooked in a water bath or in a slow cooker, the cereal turns out perfectly crumbly.
  • Leave the porridge to simmer. When ready, place the lidded pan in a warm place. The longer the cereal sits, the tastier it will be.
  • Observe the cooking time. According to the classic recipe, the cooking time for pearl barley porridge is 6 hours. But modern women don’t have so much free time, so they are increasingly looking for a shorter cooking method. If the cereal was soaked in advance, then it is enough to cook it for 45 minutes until cooked.

Proportions of cereal and water

The proportions of the components must be taken into account if you want to get a good result. Therefore, if you don’t know how much water you need for a glass of grains, think about the consistency of the porridge that you would like to get. If you cook classic crumbly pearl barley as a side dish, then the ratio of kernels to water should be 1:2.5. For a viscous consistency of the dish, take up to 1 liter of water per 1 glass of grain.

How long does it take to cook pearl barley?

As already mentioned, to properly cook pearl barley in water, it will take from 40 to 100 minutes. It will not be possible to indicate the cooking time more specifically, since it depends on several factors:

  1. What water to soak in, warm or cold.
  2. Type of pan.
  3. Grain size.
  4. Pearl barley variety.
  5. Cooking method.

In addition, the cooking speed is affected by the age of the grains, because with long-term storage, more time is spent on heat treatment. According to experienced chefs, in order for the cereal to cook faster, you need to wait until it boils, then drain the water, fill the pan again with liquid and cook over medium heat until done.

How to cook pearl barley deliciously - a classic recipe

The raw material for pearl barley is barley, which is ground several times until the top layer is removed. Thanks to this polishing, the cereal retains its original shape and its beneficial properties: complex carbohydrates, collagen, a lot of fiber, zinc, selenium, B vitamins. A dish made from processed barley is considered a source of beauty and youth, as it contributes to the overall rejuvenation of the body.

So, to get the perfect porridge according to the classic recipe, you will need:

  1. Soak 1 cup of grains in 2 liters of hot water for several hours.
  2. Pour 1 liter of cold water over the swollen grains and bring to a boil.
  3. Boil them for 5 minutes, then cover the pan with a lid, reduce the heat, and cook for another half hour.
  4. When the cereal becomes soft and the water has evaporated completely, add 50 g of butter to the pan, a little salt, stir, turn off the heat and let it simmer in the pan with the lid closed.

Before cooking, rinse the cereal thoroughly and leave to soak overnight

  2. Pour the cereal into boiling water and start cooking. Don’t forget that you need to add salt to this porridge at the very end of cooking, so don’t add salt to the water yet. But a piece of butter will be useful: thanks to it, the cereal will acquire a pleasant, delicate flavor and will not stick together. True, oil will add calories to the dish.
  3. Cook the porridge, stirring frequently: this will make it easier for you to determine its readiness. This will take at least 20 minutes. Sometimes taste the porridge. When the grains are sufficiently boiled, add salt.

Cook the cereal in boiling water, stirring constantly

  4. Remove the pan from the stove without removing the lid, wrap it in a towel or thick cloth, and leave to simmer for 15–30 minutes.

Salt the finished porridge and add a little butter

No soaking

To prepare porridge in this way, you will need dry cereal, which you just need to wash. Before you begin, boil a full kettle of water and reheat it as needed as you go. You can add whatever you want to the cooked porridge: broth, milk, stew, meat or jam.

Pearl barley must be thoroughly washed before cooking.

Pour boiling water over the prepared barley in a saucepan so that the barley is covered by 2 centimeters. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low and simmer for about 5 minutes.

Fill the barley with water and cook for 5 minutes

Drain the barley through a colander. Add boiling water again, cook for 5 minutes and drain. You need to repeat the procedure 6 times. At the same time, increase the amount of water so that the level rises by 1 cm above the grain each time, and the cooking time by 30 seconds.

Drain the water through a colander or sieve, pour in the cereal again and cook a few more times.

For the last time, pour water up to the barley level and add salt. At this stage, you can add the products you want to the porridge. Bring the porridge to a boil, stirring, and remove from heat.

A rice cooker is a very convenient device designed specifically for preparing cereals. With its help, you can easily and quickly deal with pearl barley.

For most of us, barley porridge does not evoke the most pleasant associations. For some, this is bland, dry and, often, undercooked hospital food. For others, it’s a hateful slushy mess that was fed to them every day and every other day in kindergarten. Meanwhile, pearl barley can be cooked deliciously! And it’s quite simple and relatively quick to do. The main thing is to know a couple of secrets, thanks to which you will end up with such a mess that you won’t be able to pull it off by the ears! And all you need is cereal, water for cooking and a little salt.

Below I will tell you in detail how to cook pearl barley in water quickly and easily. This can be done in two ways: with or without pre-soaking the cereal. Each has its pros and cons, but no matter which option you choose, I guarantee you an excellent result!

Ingredients:

  • pearl barley – 1 tbsp.,
  • water – 2-3 tbsp. (depending on the desired consistency of the finished porridge),
  • salt - approximately 2/3 tbsp. l.

1. How to quickly cook pearl barley in water with pre-soaking

This method is convenient because after soaking, the cereal swells so much that to bring it to readiness, it only needs to simmer for about 30 minutes.

First of all, thoroughly wash the pearl barley under running cool water, making sure to rub the grains with your hands. Pour the washed cereal with cold water and leave until it swells for at least 5-6 hours, ideally overnight. You need to take a lot of water for soaking - about a liter per 1 tbsp. cereals

Afterwards, drain the water in which the pearl barley was soaked. We wash the cereal itself again and transfer it to a suitable saucepan.

Next, put the pan on the stove at maximum heat, pour boiling water over the barley (boil the kettle and, as the water boils, pour in the barley). To obtain dry and crumbly porridge, 2 tbsp will be enough. water. For more viscous porridge - at least 3. We take the same glass that we used to measure the cereal.

Fill with water and immediately close the lid. The water begins to gurgle within 30 seconds. Switch the heat of the stove to medium and cook the barley for 25 minutes. After the specified time, open the lid. The cereal on top has already completely absorbed the water; there is still some liquid left at the bottom of the pan. Add some salt to the barley, mix and close the lid again.

Cook the pearl barley for another 5 minutes, then turn off the stove without removing the pan from it. Let the porridge simmer and cook for another 10 minutes - and the pearl barley is ready! Then it can either be served or used to prepare other dishes (soups, salads, cutlets, etc.).

2. How to quickly cook pearl barley in water without soaking

This method is ideal for those who decide to cook pearl barley suddenly and simply don’t have time for soaking. You can also use it to prepare porridge of any viscosity. And the cooking time will average 40-50 minutes. Quite quickly, considering that we skip the multi-hour soaking step.

Just as in the previous method, we thoroughly wash the pearl barley.

Then we put it in a saucepan and fill it with cold water. The amount of water does not really matter, since after the first boil we will drain this water. I pour water over my eye so that the cereal is hidden by 1-2 cm.

Place the pan with the cereal on the stove, turning on maximum heat. Cover the saucepan with a lid.

Bring the cereal to a boil, boil for just a couple of minutes and drain the water. Place the cereal on a sieve. If, when boiling, the water tries to escape outside the pan, open the lid a little.

Return the pearl barley to the pan, fill it with cold water again, cover with a lid and bring to a boil on the stove at maximum heat. The amount of water to obtain crumbly porridge is 2.5 tbsp, for viscous porridge - at least 3.

As soon as the cereal boils again, reduce the heat on the stove to medium and simmer the porridge under the lid for 30 minutes. Then the scheme is the same as in the first method: open the lid, add some salt to the cereal, mix and return the lid to its place. Cook the porridge for another 10 minutes, turn off the stove and let the barley steam and cook for another 10-15 minutes.

Ready! We add pearl barley to salads or soup, or serve it, flavored with meat gravy, a piece of butter and herbs, with fried vegetables - to your taste.
